You can install testing from webui: Settings -> SYSTEM -> Check for updates. Updates usually go smooth but there is always a chance of (serious) bugs in testing versions.
Well, I have my ~/.nzbget backed up of course, so I'd prefer to just install testing right over Stable like this.

The only concern I suppose is, IS there a possibility that I could corrupt/loose my existing download history if testing doesn't run correctly for me.

In other words, if testing doesn't work for me, can I simply reinstall v19.1 (or an earlier testing version) from the command line:
# sh nzbget-20.0-testing-rxxxx-bin-linux.run --destdir /usr/local/bin/

to "get back" to working order. ?

The other option you mentioned, installing into a separate directory, would also require me to configure a separate MAINDIR to avoid "mixing" the two versions' caches, queues, histories, etc ??

You should backup QueueDir.

Generally new versions bring changes to queue state format and downgrade with preserving queue/history is usually not possible.

If you install into a new directory it is automatically configured to use only that directory. So unless you manually configure it to write into other locations it will not change anything at your existing system. A new MainDir is configured inside installation dir.

Don't choose /use/bin or similar because many files are installed into the installation directory, not just binaries. Something like a subdirectory in home dir would be good.

Oops.

There is one other thing to consider for installing/upgrading via the web interface in these manners:

I run nzbget as a non-privileged, i.e., not root. (/usr/loca/bin is obviously NOT world writable)

?

That's also why it's better to install into home dir.

Right

But I have a habit of installing (most) sw so that other users can access the "single" installation.

Nonetheless, it seems the safest thing to do would be to install it side-by-side, as "user", and into ~user, via the cli

$ sh nzbget-20.0-testing-r2147-bin-linux.run --destdir /home/user/testing

then cp and vi a new ".nzbget" with a different MAINDIR all together.

If everything works out, then later on I can

# sh nzbget-20.0-testing-r2147-bin-linux.run --destdir /usr/loca/bin/

and use the original ~/.nzbget

Yeah?

For a test the easiest is to install into a separate dir and leave the default config file, which is created inside that dir by installer.

What I'd like to test first if the new build starts at all. For Becksi it doesn't.t work on armv5. That is most likely caused by switch to glibc in this release.

Okay.

I'm going to install vi the cli as I noted as "user" in his sub-dir:
~/user/testing$ sh nzbget-20.0-testing-r2147-bin-linux.run

and see if it starts. brb

*Seg fault. Doesn't run. Posted more in the other (speed) thread.
