Direct Write on MacOS with APFS

Post by ovq » 11 Nov 2017, 03:49

Hi!

I wonder if DirectWrite can be safely enabled now after MacOS High Sierra and conversion from HFS+ to APFS?

Short: is Direct Write supported on APFS?

Thanks!

As far as I can see APFS is similar to Linux file systems in a way that it doesn't require any special code to create sparse files. If you activate DirectWrite it should automatically use sparse files. To verify that try downloading something consisting of large files (500-1000GB, for example BD isos) and monitor download speed via click on remaining time, then on "Total downloaded". With sparse files the graph should be smooth. On HFS+ with DirectWrite the program periodically locks up for a moment every time the next output file is created.

Thank you! I will try that.
I didn’t even know that DirectWrite works at all under HFS+
